The Speed of Hertz

Fantastic look to the old school. And really, it’s not even about the graphic treatment, that’s just to stand out – the true beauty here is that they went back to the roots and the message takes over the ad. Each poster has one message, one selling point that it demonstrates. It’s clear and concise.

New Society6 Print: Trineapple

To keep my minimalist dymaxion map company, a new print!

Surreal robot-legged fruit are the new wolf sweaters, so tell all your hipsters friends that it’s stupid and then they’ll wear it because it becomes ironic and artsy.

The stretched canvases from Society6 are a wee bit expensive, in my opinion, but the shirts are really reasonable. Printed on ever-comfortable American Apparel shirts (seriously, I own a bunch of them – best T shirts in my closet) they’re actually cheaper than buying a straight up, plain shirt from AA directly. Not sure how that works, but who cares! You’re getting the savings passed on to you. And, a super sweet surrealist printed shirt to boot. Awesome.

Check it out and maybe buy one? You do want to be the envy of all your friends, don’t you?

Of course you do.

Guy Fawkes Poster

I tread posting this very lightly, as the figure has come to mean a great number of things to various people and I don’t want to establish myself as a supporter of anything since, well, I’m not really a supporter of anything.

In the meantime, if you don’t know the story of Guy Fawkes, you should probably read it as it’s some really interesting history and moreso since we’re sort of experiencing a repeat of it lately, though in slightly different flavours.

So, today is November 5th and a day of significance for Europe (but increasingly global as of late) and since I wanted to do a poster for warmup anyway, I figured I’d do something fitting.

Warm minimalism.

It’s silly that I need that adjective. Minimalism, despite common reputation, is not inherently cold. But, I’ve ranted on this before, so I’ll leave it be.

Anonymous’ graphic design abilities

I wrote briefly about the psychology of brain v. brawn and how humans tend to decide you’re one or the other, rarely both, and I think the same effect can be seen here:

Coders are rarely seen as having graphical abilities.

And so, in order to amplify their apparent coding (or: hacking) abilities, I suspect they deliberately made the post as visually awful as they could, resulting in the above. Because really, I’m pretty sure every single one of them has a friend or knows somebody who would be willing to do it – this assuming nobody in the entire far reaches of Anonymous could do it themselves.

Just an interesting observation on psychology. I wonder if it isn’t also true in the brain / brawn world: smart people being deliberately weaker or strong people dumbing themselves down slightly.

Relating to the event itself, the Occupy Wallstreet thing, some interesting things are happening. Taken from that site:

A message to blue-collar police:
Do not do what you are told. We are peaceful and you know this. We offer you coffee in the morning and water in the day. You always refuse and we know that’s because they told you to.
Speak of the crimes of your supervisors. We will help you. We are expressing the same frustration that you feel. You are the 99 percent. Join us. Join our conversation.

As with anything that involves large groups it’s hard to generalize who’s ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ (if that even exists at all) and of course there will be examples everywhere of non-conforming group members. Yeah some police will be particularly, if not unnecessarily, violent. Yeah, some protesters are causing more trouble than they should. But for the most part I think most of the group’s intent reflects the quote above, and I think a lot of the police would be for it if it didn’t mean turning on their jobs. It’s sad, but big systems like that tend to be sluggish and archaic when dealing with events like these.

So, I’m not affiliated with any party, really, but these are events shaping our world right now and I think awareness is a good thing.

NSFW

So yes, language warning.

But I think without the language it wouldn’t have the same meaning., you know? So it that sense, I feel it’s warranted.

And it’s all good advice. Heed it.

Stay awesome.

8/365 :: Vintage Typography

Definitely a lot more in my comfort zone here, which, according to the point of the project, isn’t a great place to be. Break out! Expand the skillset. Make mistakes. That’s the true goal.

Still, I’d forgotten how fun this style is.

Plants – Atelier Olschinsky

Definitely loving these. The precision with the chaos. The colours are perfect.

Randy Otter – Quirky Illustrations

That last one’s description is “house music” which is hilarious.

I don’t own any, and I would never wear them, but I do appreciate the witty t shirt graphics that sites like Threadless and Shirt.woot come out with. I think there’s a real talent in making something universally recognizable, universally funny and usually without words, setup or explanation. As a bonus, the illustrations themselves are usually awesome, sticking to t shirt printing in minimal colours (which in itself is a chore sometimes).

So, I love the above.

Monikered

I seem to recall that I’ve seen this work before, but it’s cool to see some new stuff in the gallery as well.

Fantastic posters, anyway. Style a lot like Scott Hansen, which is always a compliment.

That last one is a great example of my tutorial. That’s all it is, really; circle masks with some rotation.
